Peace Corps Week
All Year Long
Speak About Your Service
ANYTIME during the year!

Liz Brown speaks to a classroom of Girl Scouts

Although Peace Corps Week (first week in March) is the official time to celebrate promoting a better understanding of other cultures, we can get into the community, share our experiences, and open up the world, one speaking engagement at a time throughout the whole year!

Speak to students at Peace Corps Information Meetings, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, schools and groups throughout San Diego County, and more...

Up-coming Speakers Needed!
(see also in Bulletin Board under Connections)

Some guidelines for possible presentations:

  • Speakers can present the culture of their host country
  • Presentations can be as interactive as possible:
    • photos,
    • local foods
    • clothing
    • fabrics,
    • national music, etc.
  • Speakers can have a frank discussion with the students and answer questions about what some of the country's/community's real needs are.
  • Students can work on some sort of service project tied to your presentation. The teacher or leader of the group you present to would coordinate such an activity.
    • Teacher/group have contacted group(s) of children in a presenter's country of service to communicate or receive/exchange these packs although that's not required.
    • The children have made little "Peace Packs," knapsacks with their handprints in paint, a note of peace, and some school supplies and basic dental hygience stuff and send them to the country they learned about.
    • It's always really fun, and the kids are super curious.

If you are an RPCV and would like to share your experiences:

  • Contact Tracy Addis, Speaker Chair,
-- To help you find where you can speak and
    -- To help you prepare.
  • Contact http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/speakersmatch/
    -- List yourself and
-- Find places near you that want speakers.
    .
  • Contact PC Wasington to get a Presenter's Kit to help your presentation -- To register online to receive the free kit at https://www.peacecorps.gov/rpcv/peacecorpsday/register/index.cfm?&
    .
  • Afterward: Let Liz Brown, Newsletter Editor, know about your presentation
    -- Submit pictures
-- See yourself listed here and in Pacific Waves.

Sept/Oct Peace Corps Recruiting Events
RPCVs are welcome to help talk with interested students!

I love help from anyone, as I really get bored of my own stories and I often get swamped with 4-5 students at a time. Possible free food at the many of the fairs – and pockets full of free pens and trinkets from other recruiters!

For more details on any event people can just email me directly.

(4) December Community Action Event:
Food drive at Annual SDPCA Holiday Party

We were so inspired from our September volunteer project at the San Diego Food Bank that we’ll be hosting a SDPCA food drive at this year’s annual holiday party. Food is a basic necessity and during the current economic crisis, there is an increasing need for the Food Bank’s services. Please help out by bringing a food donation to the party. In a sense, it will truly be a potluck!

The San Diego Food Bank
needs food that will provide nutritious meals for people in need.

Most needed items include:

  • Canned meat & tuna
  • Canned soups
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned beans
  • Spaghetti
  • Dry cereal
  • Rice
  • Mac & cheese

Two important things to remember:

  1. Please do not donate home-canned or homemade goods. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated but the Food Bank is not permitted to accept these items.
  2. Regular size products are preferable. Jumbo/king size are often not suitable for smaller households.
